5 Tips to Enjoy Reading the Bible and Transform Your life

The Bible is not boring; you're just reading it wrong.

Reading the Bible can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’re struggling to find the motivation or excitement to dive into God’s Word. However, with the right approach, it can become a vibrant and life-changing experience. I have read and listened to the Bible over 55 times in the past decade.

Here are five practical tips to help you enjoy, understand, and apply the Bible in a meaningful way.

1. Approach the Bible as a Conversation with a Living God

When you open the Bible, you’re not just reading words on a page—you’re engaging in a conversation with the Creator of the universe. A missionary friend once said, “We are with the One who speaks when we read God’s Word.” The Bible is inspired by God, written through human hands, and alive with His presence. Shift your perspective: you’re communing with Jesus, the Living Word, through prayerful reading. Approach each session with expectation, as if you’re sitting down to talk with a close friend who has life-changing wisdom to share.

2. Let the Holy Spirit Be Your Guide

The Holy Spirit is your companion in understanding Scripture. He brings to mind the teachings of Christ and helps you internalize God’s Word. As you read, invite the Spirit to guide you in a humble, prayerful walk. Seek to align your heart with God’s will, asking for clarity and insight to live out His truth for His glory.

I spend about 3-6 hours a day reading and studying God's Living Word. I give away my weekly verse-by-verse notes for free. Click the button below to subscribe to the weekly commentary.

3. Read the Bible in Community

The Bible isn’t meant to be studied in isolation. Travis emphasizes that interpretation happens best within a community of believers. While personal reading is essential, bring what you learn to your brothers and sisters in Christ, especially under the guidance of elder-led, biblically qualified churches. This communal approach guards against misinterpretation and fosters accountability. There aren’t endless interpretations of Scripture—either you’re right, I’m right, or we’re both wrong, and the truth lies in what God intended. Engage with others to refine your understanding and grow together.

4. Seek the Author’s Intended Meaning

To truly grasp the Bible’s message, consider the context in which it was written. The Scriptures were penned in a different time, culture, and context than ours, so it’s crucial to ask, “What did the author intend to communicate?” The author—ultimately God—determines the meaning of the text. Study the historical and cultural background of each book to uncover its purpose, then prayerfully apply those truths to your life today. This approach bridges the gap between ancient words and modern application, making the Bible relevant and transformative.

5. Use the Sword Method for Practical Application

The “Sword Method,” a simple yet powerful way to engage with Scripture, likening it to a double-edged sword with a handle for application. As you read, ask three key questions:

  • What does this text communicate about God? Understand His character, promises, and will.

  • What does it communicate about man? Reflect on human nature, sin, and our need for God.

  • How then shall I live?

Apply these truths to your daily life in a practical and transformative way. Without application, Bible reading becomes a mere intellectual exercise. The Sword Method ensures that your time in God’s Word shapes how you live, encouraging you to walk closely with a living God and inspire others to do the same.

Final Thoughts:

Make Bible Reading a Transformative Adventure. Reading the Bible doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be a dynamic, joy-filled journey that deepens your relationship with God. By approaching Scripture as a conversation with Him, relying on the Holy Spirit, engaging in community, seeking the author’s intent, and applying what you learn with the Sword Method, you’ll discover the transformative power of God’s Word. Walking with a living God through His living Word is highly transformative. Start today, and let the Bible come alive in your heart.
